Sunday's Weekly Round-Up - 25th April 2010

Hello there, I have been away from here for a while haven't I? Well those of you clicking through to my other website(s) will probably have seen all the goings on with the The Tally Ho Tearooms.

I have been living, eating and breathing the place for the last 4 months and this last month we have been working our little tails off! I am happy to say that we have been very busy serving lots of lovely customers full of compliments for the Tearooms... the decor, food, uniforms, service, etc.

Many cusomters have been been back a number of times already and we have only been open 3 weeks! The record so far (I think) is a lady who has been back 5 times, bringing a different person with her each time! A big thank you to all those who've been to see us and enjoyed their visit.

As for scrapbooking, well we held our first ScrapBuddies crop in the Tearooms on 13th and we have our first Open crop this coming Tuesday, for which I should be preparing a demo!

Because of the non-scrapbooking stuff going on in my life at the moment, I haven't written many articles and so the next Newsletter will be an April/May issue!

I did manage to get the freebie download out though, which was some free printable background papers (pictured). If you sign up to the newsletter, you get instant access to all previous freebies.

I have also managed to write the first of some quick journaling tips.

This week I have written a couple of Scrapbooking Articles.

One is some advice for beginners where I tell you what NOT to buy, and the best way to start.

Don’t get the Wrong Scrapbooking Advice!
I do get fed up every time I read “the first thing you need to do as a beginner to scrapbooking is buy an album, a few papers and some adhesive”!
That makes me cross because you DON’T need to buy an album, if you are just trying scrapbooking out as a hobby. It’s a wasted expense if you decide you don’t like it for a start, but I put beginners off buying an album until they have made a few pages and can decide in what size they prefer to work...

We have had some lovely weather this week, I have been outside, but as it's difficult to see my Laptop screen outside I have to be indoors for all that stuff, and then there's scrapbooking itself... you can't take it outside, especially if there is a breeze!

So actually I have spent a lot of it indoors one way or another! A few years ago (before scrapbooking) I used to spend most of waking hours in the garden... hardly do anything now, but then I have about a 10th of the size garden now!

2 Videos - Stitch & Craft Show and a Paper Tearing Technique

Well it's been fun and games at my house!... I have finally managed to edit the videos from the Stitch and Craft show, but only because I have borrowed someone else's machine to do it! (see end)

So below is that video of the Stitch and Craft Show and underneath that is another video! That one is about How to Make Layered Flowers by ripping paper. Quite a useful technique... especially if you have forgotten your scissors! LOL The flowers can be used for scrapbooking pages and for cards, both of which I show you in the "How To" Video.

As I mentioned above I, and my computer shop owning friend have spent hours trying to figure out why not one, but two video editing suites won't work on my laptop after it's new hard drive!! I am determined to conquer... not giving up on this one!

How to place Text directly on your Photographs Before printing

Hi there all !

Well there I was poised to create my montage video of my trip to the Stitch and craft Show last week, and low and behold... there is something wrong with my video editing software since my laptop went in for it's new hard drive! Are we all standing in amazement... not really... we've all come to expect that PCs, just like cars can go into fix one thing and come out with something else wrong!

So my montage will have to wait - along with my other videos due to be done this week - till my IT expert (!) can help solve the problem!

Till then, I am sincerely hoping it will be very soon, I am posting another HOW TO VIDEO from the SimplyScrapbookingNow.com archives (lots more over there too!).

It's about how to place a white title (or any text) onto a photograph before printing it using MS Word.

Scrapbooking Video - How to create more space on your page and hinge a photo

Here is a video from the SimplyScrapbookingNow.com site. It's about how to get more photographs on your page and yet it still looks like a one photo "arty" page.

You know the sort I mean, those pages you would like to make which have one photograph and lots of lovely papers and embellishments to set it off. The only problem is that it doesn't make a dent in your "photo mountain" and you need to scrapbook more photos. Also other photographs are necessary in your scrapbooking pages to tell the story correctly.

So here is one solution to that problem.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well and scrapping and/or card making like mad things!... here is the weekly update from me!

First of all, here are a couple of cards I have made recently (one actually this afternoon as I have to give it as a bithday card tomorrow!)

Here is a closeup of the flower detail. I have made a video about how to maked these really eacy flowers.

Below is the other card, which I started at a cardmaking gathering I attended one evening back in February. It was held at a local shop to me in Lowestoft called The Norwich Road Craft Shop which is run by Margaret. The evening get togethers are every other Wednesday, the next one being 18th March. I met a lively bunch of ladies of all ages busily making cards for a couple of hours.

It's held in the shop itself and therefore all the stock is available for you to buy too... handy that! If you are local to Lowestoft and want to ring Margaret, the telephone number is 01502 567123, otherwise the link to the shop website is above (click the name).

Although I started make the card at the Norwich Road meeting, I finished it as an example for the tutortial video, I mentioned. The video in question is part of the new SSNow.com Newsletter (March issue) which I published last week.

It's about using Heavily patterned paper and letting it do all the work, have a watch!

I also visited a crop yesterday, run by Tracy. Tracy started in scrapbooking, but actually has moved over to cardmaking and has a huge amount of equipment, which she generously brings with her to the crop for everyone to use.

There were stamps and inks, various useful punches, a cuttlebug with dies and embossing folders (which I like very much!) and a Cricut with lots of cartridges... a very nice piece of kit, quite expensive (plus the cost of each cartridge) but very easy to use. I myself have a Craft Robo at home, but the Cricut was very portable as you don't need a computer to run it.

I did make a page layout which I finished at home, but I can't share it as I sent it off to a magazine for possible publication, but I will share as soon as I can.

I'm still working hard on the Hybrid Kits, and I will post up the freebie very shortly now (may be mid week even!) if you are a subscriber you will get notification via email when the freebie is available.

Scrapbooking Technique of layering used on a birthday card

This is a birthday card I made from the scraps of a 12x12 scrapbooking layout I posted on the blog a short while ago. Click here to see the Layout.

It is an A5 size card (roughly 6x8"). I deliberately tried to stay very close to the design of the layout as it was for a demo to my crop group, showing that many, if not all scrapbooking techniques can be used on cards too.

Scrapbooking Ribbon technique - Video

Here is a video showing you a technique to use ribbons. I lurve ribbons!

This video shows how to scunch and sew them for your layouts.

It's quite long, but you can get the gist of the technique by fast forwarding a little!

The video is by "scrappyrachy" on Youtube, there doesn't seem to be an associated blog, etc for this lady, however.

Working with Aqua Pencils and stamps

I know a number of people who have bought aqua pencils, and have done nothing with them!



Why... because it looked like a good idea, but they didn't really know what to do with them, or how to achieve good results.



So if you have some aqua pencils languishing in one of your draws, get them out, dust them off and I'll tell you what you can do!



In the top picture, you can see a pack of pencils. Obviously you need to have some water and a paintbrush... OR use a waterbrush (pictured)



A waterbrush has a built in reservoir, so you can use your watercolours/pencils wherever you are. No jars of water to accidentally knock over!


Anyway, if you are using moisture of any kind with your stamps then you need to use a solvent based ink, rather than a water based one, otherwise your stamped image will "run" into your colouring.


Stamp your image using the solvent based ink onto (preferably) some card - this means that there will be less "warping" when water is introduced to the image.

To achieve the gradual shading, as in the close-up picture here, colour only one side of an area with the pencil. Now use your brush gently over the pencil colour and "pull" the colour across the rest of the area. You should end up with a gentle faded colour from one side to the other, the darker area being where the original pencil colour was. As you can see it gives a "3D" effect because of the shading.

Make sure you turn your paper around to suit the direction you wish to "pull" the colour. Don't be afraid to turn your paper upside down if necessary to create the right vignette.



The final photo here is of some different coloured stamped images.

A quick way to darken text on a scrapbook layout

This is a close up of the hybrid page I made recently - see Monday's post.

It's to show the word "Deep". As you will notice, it is shiny!

I thought that in the printed copy of the digital page the black words did not have enough contrast so I used some 3-D Gloss over the top to just lift the letters and give more definition.

I used a thick needle to "paint" the gloss onto the thin image.

It's a quick and easy way to Darken any printed graphic or text.

What is "gutting" in Scrapbooking terms?

When the term "gutting" is used by us scrapbookers, you know we are not referring to fish... right?!!!

Of course not! What it refers to is the fact that you are "gutting" a piece of card or paper by taking the middle out of it.

Why would you want to do this...?

Well it's a means of economics really. If you "gut" the mat of a photograph or, in the case of the one in the photos here, a whole layout... you get to use the bit in the middle for something else. It makes your stash "go" further.

It would be a waste to leave almost a whole sheet of card which isn't going to be seen.

The reason I wanted to mat the layout here, was because it is a digital A4 layout that I printed out and, of course, my A4 printer can't quite print up to the edge of a whole piece of A4, so there were margins.

I wanted to make the layout up to a proper A4 size and so matted it.

However, before adhering it to the page I used my steel rule and scalpel to gut the card first and now have almost a whole sheet of A4 to use for something else too!

P.S. If you are wondering why I haven't shown you the front of this scrapbooking page, it's because I am submitting it to a magazine for possible publication and so can't publish it here until I know whether it will be published or not! But will as soon as possible.

Keeping your ribbons in place

I, like a lot of people, like to put ribbons and fibres on the book rings of my projects.

Pictured is a paper bag book album.

Some ribbons, such as rikrak and some of the cheaper ribbons are happy to be tied once and stay put on the rings. Others, however, (the better quality, double sided ones) quite often untie themselves.

I had to re-tie a number of ribbons which had fallen off on a recent Circle Journal!

So, some tips for keeping the ribbons, etc, where you put them...

1. Try knotting the ribbon twice, sometimes this is all that's needed.

2. Once you have tied the ribbon, you can use a bit of pvc glue "inside" the knot, using a clip of some sort to hold it place whilst it dries. The thin precision nozzles on a number of crafters pvc glue bottles makes this easy.

3. Tie the ribbon once and then use a brad to hold it. Can make for nice decoration if you use a contrasting colour.
